CVIP Inspections in Edmonton
What Alberta's Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) requires for trucks and trailers in Edmonton, and what to ask a shop before booking one.
In Alberta, trucks, truck-tractors and trailers with a registered gross vehicle weight over 11,794 kg need a CVIP inspection every year (over 4,500 kg if they run outside Alberta). The inspection must be done by a licensed technician at a facility licensed by the province. Buses are inspected twice a year.
Section 19 of Alberta's Vehicle Inspection Regulation requires commercial vehicles to have a valid inspection certificate and decal, and the driver must be able to show the certificate to a peace officer on request.
On 29 October 2026, Alberta's Vehicle Inspection Facility Search listed 316 licensed commercial vehicle inspection facilities with an Edmonton address. Not every shop is licensed, so ask the shop to confirm it's licensed for your type of unit when you call. If the unit fails, ask whether the repairs can be done in the same visit, so it's back on the road sooner.
Brakes are a common reason units fail; see air brake repair. Booking a PM service shortly before the inspection is due can catch small problems first.
Common jobs
- Annual CVIP inspections for trucks and trailers (at licensed facilities)
- Pre-inspection checks before your due date
- Repairs to pass a failed inspection
- CVIP decal and inspection certificate
Have this ready when you call
- Type of unit (truck, tractor or trailer) and its registered weight
- Plate or unit number
- When the current inspection expires (it's on the certificate)
- Where the unit will be, and when it can come off the road
- A PO number, if your company uses them
Common questions
How long does a CVIP inspection take?
It depends on the unit, its condition and any repairs it needs to pass. Ask for a time estimate when you book, and whether the unit will need to stay overnight.
How much is a CVIP inspection in Edmonton?
Alberta doesn't publish a CVIP fee; each licensed facility sets its own, and we found no Edmonton heavy duty shop publishing a CVIP price online (October 2026). Ask for the inspection price for your type of unit, and the labour rate for any repairs, before booking.
